Why I am not allowed to read the sequels to books about metal dragons.
Just finished Shadow Magic. Now I want to read it again and just BASK, but I should reread Havemercy first.

The short version: everything I was promised. Caius Greylace's tombstone will list the following three words: DIPLOMAT, FASHIONISTA, and PSYCHOPATH and that, dear friends, is apparently the way I like it.

Shadow Magic SPOILERS ABOUND. )

I seriously stopped being able to do much other than froth about three chapters in, so these notes pretty much cover the first two chapters and major events thereafter. And, uh. That is all I have to say, because I'm really struggling not to just launch myself back into Havemercy straight away! Partially because I am like NO, WANT MORE CAIUS, BUGGER THE FIRST BOOK.

People are fascinating.
This week, there was a storm of protest online when Robert Downey Jr. suggested his onscreen Sherlock Holmes—scheduled to hit theater screens on Christmas—might have had a gay fling with Watson (Jude Law). Gawker described the "full blown gay panic" from conservative film critic Michael Medved. "Who is going to watch Downey Jr. and Law make out?" he asked. "I don't think it would be appealing to women. Straight men don't want to see it."
- What if G.I. Joe Were Gay?

Actually, I'm pretty sure I'd pay good money for that. But not in a Sherlock Holmes movie. XD That's not the point, guys.

The sad part is So maybe it's just a matter of time before we see our first openly gay action hero. Um, guys? THERE ARE LOADS OF THEM. It's not our fault you're blind to nuance.

End of the article linked above is worth reading, though. :3 Awww. You go, little old lady.

That wasn't actually what I wanted to talk about, it just caught my interest as I was browsing LJ.

Because Mum just walked back in.

I HAVE SHADOW MAGIC.

So now I am off to ignore my cleaning and read about the aftermath of metal dragons in the Empire. Aaaaahhhhhhhhh! *runs*

[EDIT] Except I just have to link that Gawker article so I don't forget to read it because it has script excerpts that may or may not be totally invented.

[EDIT] Except that I clearly don't know when to stop:
But the only explicit sex mentioned is a half-naked post-coital shot of Downey and Rachel McAdams in bed.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH HE ADMIRES HER FOR HER MIND BECAUSE SHE IS AMAZING YOU BASTAAAAAAAARDSSSSDJHDJFhjsdfhadjsfhljksdfks

New definitions for words.
My stomach is really, really unhappy with me today. I probably should have listened to it at breakfast and lunch when it said, "Yeahhh, not actually hungry." Sigh.

Work was... well, we fixed things, and by 'we' I mean 'Darrin'. I just sat and :B'd like the n00b I am. Then we got to the end of the process and discovered I didn't actually have the permissions for it! Which was awesome. And by awesome I mean 'caused Darrin to headdesk and go aaaaaaargh very quietly to my left'.

Also, because I stayed later than I intended, I missed the bookshop. So Shadow Magic is about 150m away, locked in a shop I cannot get into until late tomorrow morning. This may not seem like a big deal but dammit, Caius Greylace is in that book.

But on the bright side, that's nearly sorted. XD And I did finish the Seam docs (again) in time for the second QE build. So, yay.

In the not-yay category, Oopee is still in hospital, mum keeps bursting into tears because Oomee is in a dementia ward, about four separate people died on Dad's side, and, yeah, it's been kind of a shitty week on the family front.

But it's the weekend now. I am going to install F11 and read Havemercy in preparation for Shadow Magic, and talk to mum about visiting Oopee after Chris has gotten her to calm down a little. There's only so much my cuddles and reassurances can do before I start Being Pragmatic, and that is not comforting in the least.

what am i doing oh god help whyyyy
So today Shadow Magic was officially released and I do not have it and SOMETHING'S WRONG. DDDD:

I had another lovely 6am meeting, continued working on the neverending chapter (WHICH IS NEARLY ENDING OMG) and finally gave in the urge to send off y own obsessive-compulsive project charting to management since they obviously do not care enough/are too busy to do anything about the confusion plaguing Engineering. "LOOK, I PUT THIS TOGETHER A FEW WEEKS AGO," I said. "AS AN EXAMPLE," I said. "YOU MIGHT FIND IT USEFUL," I said. I am preparing for epic OTZ moments in the future and praying that I have not bitten off more than I can chew, here.

Resisting the urge to shake some people until they learn to play nicely.

Also resisting the urge to watch MANY EPISODES of Sherlock Holmes tonight, since there is no middleware meeting tomorrow morning.

In other news, must stop storing the Earl Grey with the Traditional Afternoon. WEIRD THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN MY MOUTH.

And with that, I am off to write so that Tina does not enact cruel punishments upon me. Sob, doesn't she realise I could be enjoying Jeremy Brett's nose?

People who cannot work out what 'Margrave' means in a society like Volstov's do not get to review Havemercy, or the wrath of [info]thremedon falls upon them like the mighty oak from the Concorde.

Particularly when they go on to call 'roman' a made up word.

....yeah, you know what, the further I read the more I want to grab this person by the shoulders and shake them until they HAVE AN EDUCATION. IT MAY TAKE SOME TIME.

I mean, by all means, disagree with me on how awesome a book is, but at least have A SINGLE VALID POINT when you do so. XD;

I mean, yes, as a reviewer, I would still probably give it a 3.5/5, but for fuck's sake... valid points, guys! You can do it! A little forethought! A little research! Unless you want to call your review community, "Reviews for the Literarily Apathetic".

...uhhhh, I mean, work was fine. XD; H-hi, everyone!

The interview was fine; five people, two and a half hours, and many repeated questions. It was all very casual and friendly and I have reserved high hopes. (If nothing else, I have recommended Sarah Monette to someone else. XD)

I am reading Kushiel's Chosen and far too tired for the usual fantasy nonsense. (In my head I am composing a letter that goes, Dear Fantasy Author, if I wanted a travel book I would buy one from Lonely Planet.) Really, really love the book. Do not love Phédre's propensity for being kidnapped and taken to exotic places because it is all too much to concentrate on and this is why I like Doctrine of Labyrinths: because the journey is coherent and purposed and there are dull, unimportant bits that Mildmay very helpfully skips over.

And... yeah. Tired. Tomorrow goes like this:
- fire door check
- nothing
- staff meeting
- drinks

and thank all the small gods for that.

DKLFJDKJFJS IDK MY BFF JAIDANI???
The third Havemercy book is tentatively about Rook and Thom post-Havemercy.

The third book.

WHAT THE HELL AM I GOING TO DO UNTIL AUGUST 2010.

I DO NOT KNOW WHETHER TO LAUGH OR CRY, BUT AT THIS POINT? CRY.

jsdfjh dsjfhsdj sadjfhsdjssfdsfd, does this mean we get, like, whole new character-set in Shadow Magic and oh god of course we do it is probably about the Ke Han SECRET NINJA WHO WERE BRED SPECIFICALLY TO TAKE DOWN DRAGON PILOTS IDK.

*will be okay in a little while is just kind of grieving for the probable lack of Thom and Rook in the second book already because she will PROBABLY DIE WITHOUT THEM JUST SAYING*

.....at least it will be, you know, canon eventually.

............also, pebble!egg has a crack. :3 Go, go, pebble-egg!
